Welcome to middle school, 6th grade! My classes are about participation! If you are actively engaged in the activity or discussion - then you will be learning! You will be using Moodle to access homework, use internet resources that I have posted for you, and upload your work for my review. We will be working together and creating shared documents that will help us all as we move forward. It's going to be a wonderful year!
In Math we study fractions, geometry, measurement, decimals, and graphing. In Science we follow the Lab Learner program. The Western Hemisphere is the area of concentration in Social Studies.
This year you'll pack up your tote bag and spend the day with two teachers instead of just one. You will focus on becoming an organized and independent reader, writer, and thinker. As you learn new grammar skills, you will be encouaged to use them in our many creative writing projects. In relgion class, the sacraments and mass will become more meaningful for you as you learn more about them. A year of challenges and a lot of fun await you in fifth grade.
Plan on having an amazing time as a fourth grader! We will constantly be out of our seats moving around and communicating with one another while learning long division, the Ten Commandments, higher order thinking skills, Pennsylvania's history, and forms of energy. I have high expectations for all of you, and I'm looking forward to us building a nurturing and supportive classroom environment together.
Our classroom is one of respect for all, learning, and laughter. I know all students will feel welcomed every day and will grow and develope into fine young teens . I believe movement and role play makes the day fun and exciting and helps with long term memory. Our BEST memory for learning reinforcement is the dissection of squid. I have been doing this project in our animal unit for over 15 years and is one of the most enjoyed event we do all year! Don't forget, we ALL have to try the calamari . There are so many fun events that we do throughout the year! Every month brings something new and exciting. Fourth grade definitely a great year at SSJ.

Students will be familiar with the Sign of the Cross, various prayers, the Spanish alphabet, numbers 0-1000, and vocabulary dealing with family members, house descriptions as well as school vocabulary.
Children come to the library and put their books on the shelf. After the library skill is taught, children complete work on that shill. During this time one table at a time selects their books.
Students come once a week to return and take-out books and magazines. They are instructed on terms such as different types of books, book awards, book reports, reference material, research, plays, poetry, web sites, Library of Congress, public domain, plagiarism, etc. I also collaborate with the Language Arts teachers to integrate course curriculum activites.
Let's have fun while learning different things about Microsoft Word, Power Point, Publisher, and Excel.
In our computer lab, we have real life activities that engage students in weekly assignments. Such as, the "pet store" Microsoft Publisher project. Students pair up to create a pet store that requires a "partners page" which describes each partners' duties, store motto, store name, and more. A pet store brochure must also be created that presents the pet store's offerings, pricing, and coupons.
At the beginning of each weeks' class, younger classes "celebrate" events in their lives: Birthdays, a new puppy, favorite ice cream flavors and even a new brother or sister. Such "class beginnings" bring about togetherness and warm feelings that can be felt throughout the class as we begin our weekly activity.
The music curriculum for grades K-8 covers concepts such as pitch, beat, rhythm, melody, harmony, dynamics, and tempo, which are built upon from year to year. Topics include various genres of music throughout different historical periods and cultures, famous composers, instrument families, music theory, etc. Students experience music through body movement, music games, playing rhythm and Orff instruments, using Kodaly hand signals for music pitches, active listening, reading music scores, composing, playing recorder (grades 3-4), singing, and music worksheets. Extracurricular opportunities include Chorus, Concert Choir, and liturgical music ministry. Students in grades 4-8 may also choose to study an instrument with the band teacher.
Our classes are age appropriate activities in a non competitive environment. The objective of our P.E. classes is to involve the students in vigorous physical activities and to have fun while doing it.
